RUPIAH GAINS 40 POINTS EARLY WEDNESDAY

Jakarta, Jan. 14 (ANTARA) - The rupiah strengthened against the US dollar in the Jakarta interbank spot market on Wednesday morning after weakening continuously over the past few days.

Farial Anwar, a money market analyst, said here on Wednesday the rupiah edged up again after sliding down last week as market players were worried about the impact of the current global economic crisis' on Indonesia's domestic market.

Market players released the US dollars for profit taking, despite the fact that the greenback lost against yen and euro in the global market two days ago, he said.

"We are optimistic that the rupiah will advance again especially because the indice of several Asian bourses such as the Nikkie index in Tokyo are gaining," he said.

Market players' confidence also improved following the US Senate's approval of the second-stage bailout amounting to US$350 billion, he said.

He predicted the Indonesian currency would further strengthen in the afternoon, thanks to various positive factorss.

Moreover , he said, Bank Indonesia (BI) had also intervened in the domestic money market to help boost the rupiah.

"We are optimistic that the rupiah will gain further as long as there is no negative factor that pressured the Indonesian currency," He said.
