FAMOUS AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL CLUB COMING TO PENANG By Neville D'Cruz
MELBOURNE, Jan 14 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will get a huge tourism publicity boost when the famous Carlton Football Club officials and players make a three-day leisure visit to northern Penang-state from January 26, 2009.
The club will take along a TV crew from Channel 10 station and leading
football writer Mike Sheahan and a photographer from the Melbourne Herald Sun
newspaper.
Apart from daily reports in the newspaper, the television station will have
live crossovers throughout the three days in its news and sports bulletins.
"This will be fantastic for Malaysia," Tourism Malaysia's Melbourne director
Putra Hilmy Elias told Bernama.
Tourism Malaysia has signed a sponsorship package with the Carlton Football
Club, often referred to as the Manchester United of Australian Rules Football.
"Malaysia -- Truly Asia" branding will feature on the front of the Carlton
jersey.
"This is a significant commitment by Carlton and Malaysia, an exciting new
partnership that is a ground-breaking venture in the Australian Football
League," Carlton's chief executive Greg Swann said.
"Since the announcement of the Carlton and Tourism Malaysia deal in the
Australian media, travels agents here have reported an increase in inquiries
about travel to Malaysia," Putra Hilmy said.
Leading the 24 Carlton visitors to Penang will its patron, Richard Pratt,
Australia's second richest person with a reported fortune of about A$5 billion.
He will fly to Penang in his private jet with club president Steven Kernahan,
chief executive officer Greg Swann, captain Chris Judd and seven of its best
players.
The others will travel by Malaysia Airlines.
Apart from light training in Penang under senior coach Brett Ratten, and
sightseeing, the visitors will feature in TV promotional work for Tourism
Malayasia to be shown in Australia.
Eddie Vela, former Malaysia Airlines manager in Melbourne, said the Tourism
Malaysia deal with Carlton was a "real coup".
"Carlton has strong corporate following and its members are noted for their
travel and are big spenders," Vela said.
"Malaysia -- Truly Asia branding will be seen by millions of Aussie Football
fans each week on TV when the footy season begins next month and this continues
to September," he said.
