CARCO VESSEL SINKS IN TANJUNG BELIKAT WATERS
Pangkalpinang, Bangka Belitung, Jan. 14 (ANTARA) - A cargo vesel, the "Bangka Jaya Express", is reported to have sunk in Tanjung Belikat waters, off the coast of South Bangka District in Bangka Belitung province, after being hit by huge waves.
"The Bangka Jaya Express belonging to PT Bangka Jaya Line sank on Tuesday (Jan. 13) at 11.30 pm Western Indonesian Time (WIB). Rescue efforts are being hampered by bad weather in the area," Choyriah Bari, the head of the marine traffic unit of the Pangkalbalam Port Authority , said here on Wednesday.
The fate of the boat's crew and cargo were still unknown, she said.
The vessel was carrying staple food and construction materials from Jakarta's Sunda Kelapa harbor to Pangkalbalam harbor (Bangka Belitung) when it was struck by waves reaching a height of up to six meters.
A rescue effort made by the harbor authority and the vessel's owner by using a boat was canceled on Wednesday morning due to the huge waves, she said.
The vessel's owner later requested the local police to send a helicopter to rescue e the boat's crew and cargo, she said.
How many people were on board the vessel was still unknown.
