MERCY MALAYSIA PROVIDES MORE AID WORKERS FOR GAZA
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 14 (Bernama) -- Mercy Malaysia (Mercy) has deployed two more aid workers to Cairo, Egypt to help deliver humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza.
They are its executive council member Prof Dr Ikram Mohd Salleh and a
volunteer, Dr Al-Amin Mohamed Daud, whose role would be to manage medical
supplies and equipment procured by Mercy for the victims of the Israeli attacks.
"The two will also coordinate the purchasing and equipping of four ambulance
vehicles as well as a mobile blood bank unit," Mercy said in statement here
Wednesday.
There are 30 ambulances in Gaza at the moment but the need is for 40, after
bombs destroyed dozens of them.
Mercy, said the efforts were part of its plan to deliver humanitarian
assistance to the Gazans.
In the past three days it delivered two consignments of medicines and
medical equipment into the war-torn area.
Last week, the first consignment of medicines and medical equipment weighing
50 tonnes were transported in five trucks into Gaza by the first team from Mercy
Malaysia.
The second consignments consists of surgical sets and disposable items
including syringes, intravenous infusions and bandages.
Mercy said they had put 20 volunteer doctors on standby.
So far the Mercy Malaysia Palestine Relief Fund had received RM5.35 million
(US$1.52 million) from corporate sectors and members of the public.
Mercy, which is based in Kuala Lumpur, is a voluntary and non-profit
organisation focusing on relief effort.
