NETHERLANDS SUPPORTS BALI DEMOCRACY FORUM

Jakarta, Jan 14 (ANTARA) - Dutch foreign minister Maxime Verhagen said here on Wednesday the Netherlands supported the Bali Democracy Forum that had been initiated by Indonesia.

Verhagen said at a press conference after paying a courtesy call on President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono that "the Dutch government appreciated the Bali Democracy Forum that had been held successfully because of President Yudhoyono's involvement in the process."
As a form of its appreciation to the holding of the Bali Democracy Forum the Dutch government, Verhagen said, would extend 2.5 million Euro to support the implementation of the results of the meeting in December, 2008.

The Dutch government remains committed to supporting Indonesia with regard to reform process and democratization in the country, Verhagen said.

Presidential spokesman Dino Patti Djalal earlier said in the meeting with Verhagen President Yudhoyono had explained about the country's policy towards the current crisis in Gaza Strip.

"The President underlined the country's diplomatic moves in the UN Security Council and in the UN General Assembly meeting," he said.

President Yudhoyono again called for continued efforts to make the UN Security Council's Resolution 1860 for a cease-fire honoured in the Gaza Strip.

"The main content of the resolution call for an immediate implementation of a lasting and fully respected cease-fire and full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza Strip," he said.

He said President Yudhoyono welcomed increasing cooperation between Indonesia and the Netherlands. "He welcomed the cooperation between Indonesia and the Netherlands in the fields of trade, investment, education and social sector," he said.

Besides President Yudhoyono Verhagen in the official visit to the country from January 13 to 17 would also meet with foreign minister Hassan Wirajuda and justice minister Andi Mattalatta.

Verhagen also plans to visit Yogyakarta and meet with the city's governor Sultan Hamengku Buwono X.

In the past few years the relations between the two countries in the political field were increasing, marked among others by the attendance of foreign minister Bernard Bot at the commemoration of the Indonesian independence on August 17, 2005, followed by the Netherlands' moral and political recognition of the country's declaration of independence on August 17, 1945.

The two countries' economic cooperation also increased marked by increasing volume of trade between the two countries from January to September 2008.

The trade between the two countries in the period reached US$3.31 billion up 52.5 percent from US$2.17 billion recorded in 2007.

The Netherlands was the 10th biggest investor in Indonesia in 2007 with its investment reaching up to US$147.2 million in 27 projects.

Indonesia in 2007 meanwhile was one of the countries prioritized by the Netherlands for development cooperation which was worth US$316.16 million in the year.

The Netherlands has provided humanitarian and development assistance worth US$ 20 million to several regions in Indonesia which were affected by natural disasters including Aceh and Nias and has pledged another 141 million euro for reconstruction purposes in the two regions.
