Hyundai Motor's auto exports to the Middle East gain 15 pct in 2008

SEOUL, Jan. 15 (Yonhap) -- Auto shipments by Hyundai Motor Co. to the Middle East
rose 15 percent in 2008 from a year earlier due to robust demand in oil-rich Gulf
countries, company officials said Thursday.
The Middle East is one of few bright spots for Hyundai, which has been hit hard
by a worldwide cooldown in demand for cars amid the deepening economic slump.
"Exports to oil-producing nations were good last year because they are relatively
immune to the economic crisis," said an official at Hyundai.
The jump saw Hyundai's auto exports to the region reach 171,455 vehicles.
Affiliate carmaker Kia Motors Corp. saw its 2008 exports to the region climb 43.5
percent from a year earlier to 156,726 units.
