Major German art gallery to open in Seoul

SEOUL, Jan. 15 (Yonhap) -- Die Galerie, one of the largest commercial art
galleries in Germany, will open a branch in Seoul next month in its first step to
explore the Asian art market, curators here said Thursday.
Founded in 1979, Die Galerie in Frankfurt already has three branches in Italy,
the United States and Spain and is noted for its specialty in works of modern
artists including Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall and Jean Dubuffet, as well as the
art of post-war movement "Cobra" represented by Corneille, Karel Appel and
Lucebert.
Die Galerie has been looking into opening a branch in South Korea since making
its fourth presentation at the 2007 Korean International Art Fair, the biggest
annual art event in Seoul, the gallery said in a press release.
Die Galerie Seoul, which will open on Feb. 8 in Cheongdamdong, southern Seoul,
will hold its first exhibition with works of German contemporary artists Gerhard
Richter, Georg Baselitz, Werner Bittner and A.R. Penck through April 3, it said.
The gallery's head office in Frankfurt will hold "Korean Figurative Art" exhibit
Jan. 28 to March 28.
