PRESIDENT ASKS CONSULTANTS TO WORK SERIOUSLY

Jakarta, Jan 15 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked consultants in the country to work seriously in various infrastructure projects.
Speakng at the opening of an extraordinary national conference of the Indonesian National Consultants Union (Inkindo) at the State Palace here on Thursday, the president called on the consultants to work seriously in a responsible manner to make all infrastructure projects efficient, effective, and durable.
"I ask consultants not to work in sloven or careless ways because the risks are high. For example, a school building or a bridge which was not built in a proper way will collapse when an earthquake or flood occurs," the president said.
The head of state said the services of consultants were important in various development sectors in the country to develop infrastructure projects with good quality.
Therefore, he added that every single cent from the state budget for the projects should be accounted for.
"Do not give unreliable consultation services because the cost will be very high later," the president said, calling on the consultants to have a higher competitive power than foreign consultants.
The president said that to anticipate the impact of global financial crisis on national economy this year, the government had increased the amount of funds by Rp35 trillion for infrastructure sector.
According to the president, many things the consultants could do in various development sectors in the country, especially in the development of regional economy.
He added that the consultants had moral responsibility to ensure that all infrastructure projects were done in a right way.
Meanwhile, Inkindo chairman Bachtiar Johan in his report to President Yudhoyono asked the government to support intellectual resources as the basis of consultant service industry.
Inkindo also asked the government to support its high competitive power.
Inkindo is the national consultants association which was established in 1979. It has 6,600 member companies nationwide.
