VP ASKS PUBLIC TRANSPORT OWNERS TO LOWER FARES
Jakarta, Jan 16 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla has called on public transport owners to be fair and lower their fares after the government had decided to cut fuel prices.
"We ask public transport owners to be fair and lower their fares because the government has cut the domestic fuel oil prices," the vice president said at a press conference after performing Friday prayers here on Friday.
As per Friday morning, the government had lowered domestic fuel oil prices three times this year but public transport owners had remained reluctant to lower their rates.
The vice president said besides fuel prices, the price of other commodities had already been lowered, and therefore he asked public transport owners to do the same thing.
"I am certain that the Organization of Land Transport Owners (Organda) will soon lower transport fares. Otherwise, we will demand that they do so," the vice president said.
On the occasion the vice president also asked the Transportation Ministry to immediately follow up the matter because a number of public transport owners in Jakarta had said they were not ready to lower their fares because of several reasons.
However, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said here on Thursday that a number of public transport companies had begun to lower their rates following the cuts in the premium gasoline and diesel oil prices.
"I hope this condition can be improved further in order to increase the people's purchasing power," the president said at a press conference after a tour of various parts of Jakarta to observe the impact of the fuel oil price cuts.
The head of state said he had contacted a number of regional administration heads to ask about the lowering of transport fares after the fuel oil prices were cut.
"This morning, I called on the mayor of Padang to cut transport fares there. I also did the same thing with Bogor's mayor. I checked with the Land Transportn Owners Organization (Organda), and I learned that it has lowered its tariffs," the president said on Thursday.
