VP: STATE BUDGET DEFICIT CAN CUT TO BELOW 2.5 PCT

Jakarta, Jan 16 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said he was sure the 2009 state budget deficit could be reduced to below 2.5 percent through efforts to evaluate and apply greater efficiency to the spending of state funds.
"We will carry out evaluations on expenditures and strive to increase efficiency. I am convinced that thereby the state budget deficit can be reduced to below 2.5 percent," Kalla said after attending a Friday prayers service.
Previously, the government had revised the assumed deficit in the 2009 state budget to 2.5 percent. With a deficit of 2.5 percent, the budget would need Rp35 trillion in new loans.
But the vice president also said the 2.5 percent deficit would be reached if revenues dropped and spendings were not reduced.
Therefore, he said, the government would reduce spending in order to lower the state budget deficit.
"I am sure spending can be reduced. Therefore, we should carry out evaluations of our expenditures. To set up a building now will cost less because the prices of building materials are declining," the vice president said.
But Kalla could not yet say by how much the state budget deficit could be cut by the evaluations of spendings and greater efficiency. The government was still calculating various assumptions, he said.
