EU TO LIFT BAN ON INDONESIAN AIRLINE FLIGHTS IN JUNE
Jakarta, Jan 16 (ANTARA) - The European Union (EU) has pledged to revoke its flight ban on Indonesian airline flights in its air space in March or June this year, a presidential spokesman said.
The head of the EU Delegation in Indonesia, Julian Wilson, informed President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono about the pledge at meeting at the presidential office on Friday.
"Wilson said the EU was optimistic it can lift the ban in the middle of this year, possibly in March or June," presidential spokesman Dino Patti Djalal said.
Quoting Wilson, Djalal said the flight ban was not political but mere technical so that it would be revoked soon after the EU and Indonesia had settled various existing technical problems.
He said Wilson at the meeting with President Yudhoyono had conveyed EU's appreciation about the enactment of Indonesia's new aviation law which ensured airline companies' adherance to better flight safety standards.
The EU, he said, considered the passage of the law an important factor that helped to speed up the revocation of the ban.
Djalal said Wllson at the meeting also expressed EU's appreciation for Indonesia's good cooperation in settling the issue.
President Yudhoyono welcomed the EU's plan, saying the ban had so far disturbed aviation business in the country and its tourism promotion.
Wilson paid a courtesy call on President Yudhoyono to present his credentials as head of the EU Delegation to Indonesia.
President Yudhoyono on Friday also recieved the head of the UN Office in Indonesia, El-Mostafa Benlamlih.
The president and Benlamlih discussed the situation in the Gaza Strip and cooperation to overcome climate change problems at their meeting.
To Benlamlih the head of state conveyed hope that the UN resolution for an immediate cease-fire in the Gaza Strait would be heeded by Israel.
Regarding climate change President Yudhoyono expressed hope that the US during the administration of President Obama could play a more active and constructive role with regard to climate change legislation after 2012.
