VP DENIES HE HAS SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP WITH SUPREME COURT CHIEF

Jakarta, Jan 16 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kall denied a circulating rumor that he had a close relationship with newly-elected Supreme Court (MA) Chairman Harifin A Tumpa.
"I know Harifin Tumpa well but then I know almost all Bugis people. This does not mean I have a special relationship with Tumpa," the vice president said after performing Friday prayers here.
Before Tumpa's election as MA chairman, he and another Supreme Court member, Joko Sarwoko, were reported to have played golf with Kalla's brother-in-law, Aksa Mahmud, at the Bogor Raya Golf Club.
It was Aksa Mahmud's presence at the Bogor Raya Golf Club that had given rise to the rumor that Kalla had a special relationship with Harifin Tumpa.
The vice president admitted that Tumpa and he were alumni of Hasanuddin University but added, that to become Supreme Court chief, one had to go through a tight selection, in addition to having long experience in the judicial field.
He said the top MA leadership consisted of two persons from Bugis, namely MA chairman Harifin Tumpa and his deputy, Abdulkadir Mappong.
"Like President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who knows a lot of Javanese people, I know many Bugis people but please don't view these facts in a negative light," Kalla said.
