POLICE CHIEF: PROBE ON RIZAL RAMLI MERELY TO ENFORCE LAW

Jakarta, Jan 16 (ANTARA) - National Police Chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri reaffirmed that the questioning of Rizal Ramli, general chairman of the Indonesian Awakening Committee, as a suspect in anarchic street rallies was an effort to enforce the law.

"The police have no interest whatsoever in this case. Our interest is only upholding the law," Bambang said here on Friday.

He added that the police probe of the case was conducted professionally and proportionately.

"The investigation could be accounted for juridically," he said.

The police named Rizal, a one-time economic affairs coordinating minister, a suspect following anarchic street rallies to protest against the fuel oil price hikes in Mei and June 2008.

In this case, Secretary General of the Indonesian Awakeing Committee (KBI) Ferry Joko Yuliantono attended the trial of the same case at the Central Jakarta district court.

Rizal was accused of provoking the demonstrators for action, which ended up in anarchy.
