PRESIDENT ATTENDS LAUNCH OF ELECTRONIC ZAKAT COLLECTION SYSTEM

Jakarta, Jan 17 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here Saturday officiated at the launching of an electronic zakat (Muslim tithe) collection system of the National Tithe Service (BAZNAS).

The new system, dubbed e-zakat, enables people to donate tithes at BAZNAS counters anywhere in the country electronically, and promptly receive official receipts.

The launching of the e-zakat network was conducted by the head of state on the occasion of commemorating the 8th Baznas anniversary at the Bumikarsa Hotel here.

In his speech, Baznas Chairman Didin Hafidhuddin said the agency he was chairing was engaged in four activities, namely informing the public about importance of tithe collection and management, empowering the institution in line with the organization's mission and vision, channeling and distributing tithes and cooperating with companies and other organizations in building the nation's self reliance.

Baznas itself had five international-scale prime programs such as Indonesian Concern Program, Indonesian Prosperity Program, Indonesian Health program and Indonesian pious program.
He said these activities constituted an effort to call on the people to continue and improve their awareness on the importance of tithes and contributions among the people in Indonesia as one of the solutions to the problems faced by the Indonesian nation.

The president during the launching of the e-zakat system was accompanied by Madam Ani Yudhoyono, Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silalahi, Communication and Information Minister M. Nuh and State Secretary Hatta Rajasa.
