DIFFICULT TO LOWER PUBLIC TRANSPORT FARES : ORGANDA

Jakarta, Jan 17 (ANTARA) - The Jakarta branch of the Organization of Land Transport Owners (Organda) is still finding it difficult to lower public transport fares because even the present rates are actually below transport operators' production costs, a spokesman said.

"Organda first wants a calculation of the real production costs (before agreeing to cut fares) because even the present transport fares are still below the basic price of land transportation services," said TR Panjaitan, secretary of Organda's Jakarta branch, here on Friday.

But even so, he said, Organda was ready to hold a discussion with the Jakarta Transport Service (Dishub) and City Transport Council (DTK) on the possibility of lowering the fares.

Panjaitan did not explain what he meant by "basic price of transporation services" but Organida's refusal to cut transport fares sometime in the past were based on high maintenance cost due to expensive spare parts.

"We do not refuse to lower transport fares. When the gasoline price was lowered to Rp5,000 per liter recently we agreed to cut fares by six percent (Rp200). But the government did not impose the price immediately (thus giving a chance to spare parts prices to increase the first place)," the Organda secretary said.

Meanwhile, the Dishub and DTK will hold a meeting with Organda at Jakarta Regional Legislative Assembly (DPRD) building on Monday to decide cuts in transport fares in the capital city.

Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo has asked Dishub and DTKJ to take into account the lowering of premium gasoline price to Rp4,500 per liter in calculating transport fare cuts.

"I have asked DPRD to calculate the lowered gasoline price and its impacts so that the DPRD would be able to decide the amount of a final transport fare cut," the governor said.

Transport fares are to be lowered following the government's decision to cut fuel oil prices on Thursday (Jan. 15). The price of premium gasoline was cut from Rp5,000 to Rp4,500 per liter and that of diesel oil from Rp4,800 to Rp4,500 per liter.
