VP CALLS ON LEGISLATORS TO DO SOME "INTROSPECTION"
Yogyakarta, Jan 17 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla called on House of Representatives (DPR) members to do some "introspection" in light of an academic researcher's finding that 60 percent of them ware only working half-heartedly.
"The finding on 'half-hearted' lawmakers means that House members should do some introspection," the vice president said when congratulating Idrus Marham for having successfully defended his dissertation on Indonesian democracy at Gajah Mada University (UGM) here Saturday.
In his dissertation to obtain a doctorate, titled "Half-hearted Democracy -- A Case Study on the Political Elite in the DPR-RI 1999-2004," Marham said only 40 percents of House members at present worked conceptually, and therefore he concluded democracy was still being practiced half-heartedly.
Commenting on Idrus Marham's finding, the vice president said the quality of Indonesian legislators needed to be improved.
"The people sometimes notice that in House meetings only 10 percent of House members are present," the vice president said, adding that Idrus Marham, who was a House member himself, felt that the spirit of democracy was not as high as it was supposed to be.
Therefore, Kalla said, it was the responsibility of Idrus Marham to encourage the half-hearted House members to become whole-hearted legislators.
Meanwhile, Idrus Marham said if the political elite focused their attention only on their private and group interests, Indonesian democracy would face a gloomy future.
"The process of democracy should be started in the mind and not in one's attitude. If it is started in the mind, it will lead to conceptual debates, but if it is started in one's attitude, the result will only be self-justification," he said.
Marham was examined by a panel of UGM faculty members made up of Prof Ichasul Amal, Prof Miftah Thoha, Prof Purwosantoso, Prof Nanang Pamudji, Prof Muhadjir, and Prof Bachtiar Effendi, while Prof Masdar Mas'ud acted as his promoter.
