PRESIDENT: WORLD MUST NOT ALLOW ISRAELI ATTACKS TO CONTINUE

Jakarta, Jan 17 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the international comunity cannot continue tolerating the ongoing Israeli attacks in the Gaza strip which had already taken the lives of more than one thousand Palestinians.

"A human tragedy is currently taking place, a tragedy the world cannot ignore," the president said here on Saturday.

He also expressed dissapointment about the United Nations Security Council's tardiness in issuing its Resolution 1860, and Israel's attitude in ignoring the resolution.

This was the reason that the Indonesian government had urged the holding of an emergency session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), he said.

If Israel continued to ignore the UNSC resolution, the world would hear the voice of the international community through a resolution of the UNGA memrgency session, the president said.

The president also reaffirmed Indonesia's commitment to helping the Palestinians, adding Indonsia had already done so by sending medicines, food, medical assistance and US$1 million in cash to Palestine.

"I communicated with the Palestinian authority about what they need the most. They said they did not need more tanks or bombs. They needed food and medicines," Yudhoyonoo said.
The president said if a cease-fire was declared in Gaza, Indonesia was ready to take part in a peace-keeping force in the region.

Meanwhile, the UNGA was reported to have convened in an emergency sessiong and issued a resolution calling for an immediate and lasting ease-fire in Gaza and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the area.
