PT TIMAH TO BUILD TIN CHEMICAL PLANT

Jakarta, Jan 17 (ANTARA) - PT Timah Tbk through its subsidiary PT Timah Industry plans to build a tin chemical plant with a capacity of producing 10,000 tons a year with an investment of Rp250 billion.

The secretary of the office of the state enterprise minister, Muhammad Said Didu, marked the start of the construction of the plant in Cilegon, West Java, on Saturday.

The president director of PT Timah, Usman Wachid, said the plant was expected to start operating in 2010 and its capacity would be increased to 30,000 tons a year three years after its operation.

He said the funds for the investment were taken from the internal source.

Tin chemicals are raw materials for plastic and packaging industries and making PVC pipes.

Wachid said the operation of the plant would not only give an added value to the company but also a multiplying effect of promoting stabilization of tin price in the international market.

Said Didu meanwhile said tin chemical production would also promote growth of domestic chemical industry, employment, economy in Cilegon and sorrounding villages and iron mineral industry growth in the country.

Wachid said PT Timah had so far produced tin chemicals in a company in China under BankStab trademark.

"Besides for meeting domestic need, the tin chemical produced in China is also exported," he said.

After having a tin chemical plant at home PT Timah will stop its cooperation with the Chinese company.

According to records tin chemical demand in the international market reaches 120,000 tons a year while the product is produced only by a few countries such as China, the US and in Europe.

"The market is still wide open," he said.
