GOVT CALLED ON TO AVOID CONFLICT IN NATUNA GAS MANAGEMENT
Jakarta, Jan 18 (ANTARA) - Oil and energy observer Kurtubi called on the government over the weekend to find a common solution and avoid dispute between state-owned oil/gas company Pertamina and ExxonMbil in the management of Natuna D-Alpha gas Block.
"Both sides should make a maximal effort to avoid conflict because if it happens it will take a long process to solve the dispute and the development of Natuna D-Alpha Block will consequently be delayed," Kurtubi said on Saturday.
He said that dispute would not benefit both sides as it would delay the exploitation of the gas rich block because they were busy with the conflict.
Kurtubi said that the government should use dialogs and avoid legal process that would not benefit both sides. The important thing was how to cultivate the potential field immediately for the interest of the nation and state.
He said that the government's decision to hand over the management of Natuna D-Alpha Block was correct. "But the best solution must be taken for the cultivation of the gas field," he said.
"I hope that the government would support Exxon and Pertamina to hold all out business negotiations to develop the Natuna project," Kurtubi added.
He said that ExxonMobil had been there for a long time and had the experience in exploiting Natuna's oil.
"For the application of technology, ExxonMobil is still the best so that it is now time for ExxonMobil and Pertamina to jointly develop the project," he said.
According to Kurtubi, for their common interest, both sides need a clear mind to jointly solve the problem.
As reported earlier, the government has officially refused a plan of development proposal by ExxonMobil for the cultivation of Natuna D-Alpha Block. ExxonMobil, in the meantime, has also sued the government over the rejection.
