Vietnam, Japan strengthen cooperation

Tokyo (VNA) - The Japanese government attaches great importance to boosting its relationship with Vietnam , said Takeo Kawamura, Japan 's Chief Cabinet Secretary.

Kawamura made the statement while receiving a Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV)
delegation led by Tran Van Hang, Director of the CPV Central Committee's Commission
for External Relations (CER) in Tokyo on January 16.

He said that this year is expected to witness many important events in the bilateral
ties, including the Japanese Prince's visit to Vietnam scheduled for February and
a Japan visit by Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh.

"These events will help lay a firm foundation for the two countries to build a
strategic partnership," Kawamura said.
He affirmed that Japan would soon retify and implement the Economic Partnership
Agreement (EPA) with Vietnam while continuing cooperation with and assistance
to the latter in such areas as infrastructure construction, science and
technology, human resource training and health through the Japanese government's
official development assistance (ODA).

Kawamura also suggested a closer coordination with Vietnam to boost Japan 's
cooperation with other sub-Mekong region countries.

For his part, the CER director highly valued the Japanese government and people's
cooperation and assistance to Vietnam over the past 35 years and suggested that
Japan continue assisting the Southeast Asian country in human resource training.

Hang expressed his hope that the two countries will soon realise the Vietnam-Japan
EPA, helping bring the bilateral relationship to a new height.

Earlier, the CPV delegation met with Chairman of the Japanese Communist Party
Kazuo Shii, General Secretary of the Democratic Party of Japan Yukio Hatoyama and
other high-ranking Japanese officials.

The Vietnamese guests also attended banquets hosted by Japanese Deputy Foreign
Minister Seiko Hashimoto and President of the Japan-Vietnam Friendship
Parliamentary Federation Tsutomu Takebe.

Also the same day, the delegation visited the Vietnamese Embassy in Japan .

On January 18, the delegation left Tokyo for the Japanese ancient capital of
