EAST JAVA'S GRESIK HAS OVER 7,600 ILLITERATES
Gresik, E Java, Jan 19 (ANTARA) - Up to the end of 2008, a total of 7,693 people at an age range of between 15 and 60 years old were still illiterate in Gresik district, East Java, Syahroni of the Local Eduction Service said.
He said that a survey conducted by the education service and the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPD) for Gresik branch showed that the number of illiterates in the district was dominated by women which totaled 5,567, while that of men only stood at 2,126.
Syahroni said that the number of the 15-60 year-old illiterates was higher than that of the 45-60 year-old illiterates who were recorded at 1,457 in the same year in 2008. In 2007, a total of 2,670 people at the 45-60 year old bracket were illiterate.***3***
