GOVT PREDICTS FLIGHT BAN TO EUROPE LIFTED IN MARCH
Padang, W Sumatra, Jan 18 (ANTARA) - Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal predicted that the flight ban on Indonesian airline companies imposed by the European Union (EU) to fly to destinations in Europe, might be lifted in March 2009.
"In March 2009 there will be another meeting to discuss the matter, and the government therefore hoped the meeting would decide to lift the EU ban," he said here Sunday night after opening the fourth national consultative meeting of the Land Transportation Operators Organization (Organda).
He said that most recently the European Union said if Indonesia has completed its Aviation Law, all the findings of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) which had been the basis of the flight ban, would be revoked.
He said with the Aviation Law, there would be no longer any technical reason to extend the flight ban on Indonesian airline companies, he added.
The minister also said that the revocation of the ban will not only restore the rights of Indonesian airline companies to fly to European destinations, but also the ban on Europeans to fly by Indonesian aircraft. ***2**
