RI AGRICULTURAL MINISTER AFFIRMS INDONESIA'S FOOD SECURITY
London, Jan 19 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Agricultural Minister, Anton Apriyantono, affirmed Indonesia's success in being a self-sufficient country in 2008 in the 1st Berlin summit of Agricultural Ministers in Berlin.
He also stressed Indonesia's role as the assistance giver on increasing agriculture capacity to Gambia, Tanzania, Timor Leste and some southwest Pacific countries, Agus Priono of the Indonesian embassy in London said.
The meeting initiated by the German government was attended by some 26 agriculture ministers from Asia, Africa and Europe. The meeting was held along with the World Agricultural Trade event, Grune Woche, in Berlin.
The ministers attending the meeting agreed on the urgency of taking some collective steps to create world food security by increasing the food capacity, investing in agriculture, strengthening the rural area, agricultural research and calling for participation from the donor countries.
During his visit in Berlin, Apriyantono also had a bilateral meeting with Germany's Vice Minister for Agriculture Ursula Heinan and palm oil businessmen to explain Indonesia's policy on palm oil.
It was very important considering the negative campaign on palm oil by the European NGOs and the issuing of the European Union Directives on Renewable Energy which set the sustainable criteria for the palm oil products.
In the meeting, the German government agreed to cooperate with Indonesia in certificate consolidation on palm oil.
The presence of the Indonesian agricultural minister in the summit of Agricultural Ministers in Berlin was at the right time to express Indonesia's success and role in multilateral relationship, and also to correct the wrong perception on Indonesia's agricultural policy, Wajid Fauzi, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Indonesian embassy in Berlin said.
