PRESIDENT ON WORKING VISIT IN BATAM

Batam, Riau Islands Province, Jan. 19 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is making a working visit in Batam, Riau Islands province, from Monday through Tuesday (January 19-20).

The president and his entourage departed from Halim Perdanakusuma, eastern Jakarta, on Monday, at 8 am local time, according to information from the presidential office.

During his two-day stay in Batam, Yudhoyono's agenda would include the inauguration of the Batam-Bintan-Karimun Free Trade Zone (FTZ), the signing of a document to mark the operation of 16 new investors in Batam, Bintan and Karimun. In Batam, the new projects would include expansion of three hotels and construction of three new hotels.

Riau Islands Governor Ismeth Abdullah earlier said in order to boost investment in the province, Batam, Bintan and Karimun islands had been designated as a free trade zone where exports are duty free and goods exempt from sales, added value, and luxury taxes.

Businessmen in the TFZ also enjoy special immigration, licensing, and security protection services.

On Monday afternoon, the head of state was expected to hold a dialog on the Batam-Bintan-Karimun TFZ with 50 national and 50 foreign businessmen at the Turi Beach Resort, Batam, Muhammad Tuafik, the head of the Riau islands Investment and Promotion Office, said.
