PRESIDENT ARRIVES IN BATAM FOR WORKING VISIT

Batam, Riau Islands Province, Jan. 19 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and his entourage arrived here at 10.30 am local time on Monday for a two-day working visit.

Upon arrival at Hang Nadim airport, Batam, the head of state immediately proceeded to Coastarina Ocarina Mega Tourism to officially launch the Batam-Bintan-Karimun Free Trade Zone (BBK FTZ).

Members of the presidential entourage during the visit included First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, presidential spokesman Andi Mallarangeng, Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto, Minister/State Secretary Hatta Rajasa, and Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silalahi.

On Monday afternoon, the head of state was expected to hold a dialog on the Batam, Bintan and Karimun TFZ with 50 national businessmen and another 50 foreign ones at Turi Beach Resort, Batam, Muhammad Tuafik, the head of the Riau islands Investment and Promotion Office, said.

In June 2006, the Indonesian and Singaporean governments agreed to establish cooperation in the development of Batam, Bintan and Karimun Special Economic Zone (KEK BBK), which is now called Batam, Bintan and Karimun Free Trade Zone.

According to the plan, Batam will be transformed into shipyard, electronic, and mecatronic industrial development centers; Bintan into textile, footwear, and tourism industrial development centers; and Karimun into shipyard, metal, component, agricultural, and marine produce industrial development centers.
