TASIKMALAYA, BANDUNG STUDENTS RALLY TO CONDEMN ISRAEL

Tasikmalaya, West Java, Jan. 19 (ANTARA) - Thousands of students from primary school to university staged rallies to condemn Israel's military aggression in Palestine in Tasikmalaya and Bandung, West Java, on Monday.

The rally in Tasikmalaya was participated in by thousands of elementary, junior and senior high schools students grouped in 'Islamic Unity' (Persis).

The students asked the Indonesian government to push for an issuance of a concrete resolution in the United Nations, which they have considered of having closed eyes on the Israeli brutality against the Palestinians.

They also regretted that the Arab countries and members of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) were not serious enough in trying to solve the problems of the Palestinians who have suffered due to the Israeli military attacks.

Therefore, they called on Islamic states to send their troops to help the struggles of the Muslims in Palestine.

In the rally also joined by Persis' women, the protesters called for a boycott of products made in Israel and its allies.

Meanwhile, in Bandung, students of Padjadjaran University (Unpad) in their rally to show their solidarity toward Palestine, collected funds for the Palestinian people.

"This rally is to show our care for Palestine, and participants of this long-march action also include non-Muslim students," Gena, the rally's coordinator, said in Bandung, Monday.

The students decried the Israeli brutality and genocide which have killed more than 1,300 Palestinians, including women and children.

"We consider the UN as a toothless tiger, which is helpless against the Israeli aggression in Palestine," Gena said.

Indonesia recently abstained in a vote to adopt a resolution at the emergency meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on Israeli aggression in Gaza Strip.

"Indonesia has chosen to abstain because it thinks the resolution is not strong enough to condemn Israel on its attacks on Gaza," Indonesian foreign ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah said in Jakarta, last Saturday.

Meanwhile in his speech at the UN meeting Indonesian ambassador to the UN Marty Natalegawa said that as one of Palestine's supporters Indonesia deeply regretted that it could not join other UN members to create a consensus in the meeting.

"Our delegation will have a big problem explaining to the Indonesian people about how we as members of the General Assembly not the Security Council totaling up to 190 were unable to explicitly call on Israel to stop its violence and withdraw from Gaza Strip now," Marty said.

According to Marty following a change in the draft resolution, or the third paragraph to be exact, the UN General Assembly showed that it even could not identify the main suspect behind the humanitarian crisis so far, namely Israel.

"We said we could not support the resolution not because we did not support Palestine. We, on the contrary, 110 percent support Palestine and therefore we felt the resolution was not strong enough in condemning Israel and requiring it to immediately withdraw from the territories it has occupied in Palestine," he said.
