PRESIDENT : PLUMPANG FIRE UNDERSCORES NEED TO SECURE ALL FUEL DEPOTS
Batam, Riau Islands, Jan. 19 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the fire that happened at Pertamina's Plumpang fuel oil depot in North Jakarta had underscored the need to make sure that all fuel depots in Indonesia are safe.
"It should become our homework to make sure that all fuel depots in Indonesia are safe," President Yudhoyono said here on Monday when inaugurating the Batam-Bintan-Karimun Free Trade Zone.
The president said the Plumpang fuel depot fire had forced him to delay his departure to Batam for one hour as he had to hold a meeting with some related ministers to discuss the disaster.
"My departure from Jakarta was delayed for one hour because I had to chair an important meeting at Halim airport due to the fire at the Plumpang fuel depot," he said.
The president said that the Plumpang fire was put out at 6.30 am local time on Monday and all systems were now back in operation.
"An investigation is now underway, and it is believed it happened because an engine part was not functioning," he said.
The head of state also said that the oil storage tank gutted by the fire was only one of more than 20 tanks existing at the Plumpang Depot so that fuel supplies for the Jabodetabek (Jakarta-Bogor- Depok-Tanggerang-Bekasi) area would not be disturbed.
Earlier, the President asked the public to stay calm and not to speculate on the cause of the Plumpang Depot fire which broke out on Sunday evening.
"I heard that some people were worried it was caused by sabotage or a terrorist action. I call on the people not to speculate because, in my opinion, the incident was related to a technical problem," he said.
The President is making a two-day working visit in Batam, on January 19 and 20, 2009.
