RUPIAH STRENGTHENS TO NEARLY RP11,000 MONDAY AFTERNOON

Jakarta, Jan. 19 (ANTARA) - The rupiah significantly advanced to nearly Rp11,000 per US dollar in the Jakarta interbank spot market ton Monday afternoon as market players released the greenback in profit-taking moves.

The rupiah traded at Rp11,100/Rp11,175 per US dollars, up 76 points from Rp11,176/11,180 per US dollar in the market's close last weekend.

Banking Retail Director of PT Bank Mega Tbk. Kostaman Thayib said here on Monday that the market was getting positive towards the Indonesian currency and boosted it to reach a level of nearly Rp11,000 per US dollar.

The rupiah was expected to strengthen again in the next day, following the announcement of the Bureau of Statistic Center (BPS) that the January 2009 inflation rate might again drop, he said.

The inflationary condition was the main factor which push the local currency to the position of almost Rp11,000 per US dollar, and therefore the rupiah still had a chance to add again in the next day, he said.

However, it would not be easy for the Indonesian currency to reach the level because the rupiah was currently seeking for a equilibrium, he said.

BPS said that during January 2009 in total, there would be deflation. The deflation rate might even bigger than that of 0.04 percent in December 2008, thanks to the gasoline and diesel price cut recently.
