PRESIDENT ORDERS IMMEDIATE RESUMPTION OF OPERATIONS AT PLUMPANG
Jakarta, Jan 19 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked state owned oil/gas company PT. Pertamina to immediately resume operations at its Plumpang fuel oil depot in North Jakarta after Sunday evening's fire.
The head of state hoped the distribution of fuel oils to the community would not be disturbed after the fire, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said here on Monday.
The decision to resume normal operations at Plumpang was reached at a special cabinet meeting held at the Halim Perdana Kusuma airport in Jakarta a few minutes before the president's departed for Batam to make a working visit.
Also present at the cabinet meeting were the Political, Legal and Security Affairs Coordinating Minister, the State Enterprises Minister, the National Police Chief, the Cabinet Secretary, the Home Minister, the State Secretary/Minister, the Indonesian Intelligence Agency's Chief, the Jakarta regional military commander and the Jakarta police chief.
According to Purnomo, the president asked Pertamina to coordinate with the police to enable the company to open the depot again.
In response to the president's call, Pertamina President Director Ari Soemarno said his side had targetted to make the operation return to normal at about 14:00 local time on Monday.
At present, Pertamina together with civilian servant investigators and police personnel were probing the causes of the fires in the control rooms in Plumpang and Tanjung Priok.
"After that, a trial operation will be conducted for 30 minutes. Hence we are sure the operation can be resumed at noon," he said.
In the meantime, Deputy Director of Pertamina Iin Arifin Takhyan said Pertamina was at the moment cleaning up the depot and conducting security measures to make sure that the flames had been completely put out.
"We will resume the operation this noon," he said.
Pertamina earlier closed the operation of the Plumpang fuel deport following a raging fire which destroyed a storage tank of Premium fuel on Sunday night. The fire was put out on Monday at around 7 am local time.
Plumpang depot is responsible for supplying fuel to Greater Jakarta, which uses 9,420 kiloliters of Premium gasoline and 4,677 kiloliters of diesel fuel per day.
The Pertamina deputy director said that the fuel tank having a total capacity of accommodating 10,000 kiloliters of premium gasoline, contained only 1,500 kiloliters of premium fuel when it was gutted by fire.
With premium gasoline price at Rp5,000 per liter, Pertamina lost Rp7.5 billion worth of premium in the blaze.
Meanwhile, a spokesman of Pertamina assured that the fuel supply for Jakarta would not be affected as the supply would come from Pertamina's fuel depots in Cikampek, Merak, and Padalarang.
The police with the cooperation of Pertamina, are still investigating the cause of the fire.
