HOUSE HAILS DROP IN SBI RATE
Jakarta, Jan 19 (ANTARA) - House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung Laksono hailed on Monday Bank Indonesia (the central bank/BI)'s decision to cut interest on its short-term promissory notes (SBI) to 8.75 percent although it was rather late.
"The decline in the SBI interest rate will bring a positive sentiment to the banking sector," he said at a House plenary session here.
The House hoped the drop would encourage banks to lower their lending rates and in turn boost the real sector, he said.
"The drop in SBI interest rate will stimulate demand for bank loans, including small investment credits (KIK) and working capital credits (KMK)," he said.
He said the House expected the government would always support the central bank's decision so that the current global economic crisis would not much affect the domestic economy.
He went on to say the House was fully aware of the government's plan to launch an economic stimulus package that would cost an estimated Rp50.5 trillion to deal with the impact of the global financial crisis.
