Five dead, dozens injured after clash with police at construction site

SEOUL, Jan. 20 (Yonhap) -- Five people were found dead and dozens were injured at
a construction site in central Seoul after a standoff with the police, fire
officials and news reports said Tuesday.
Fire authorities said they discovered the bodies of five people inside a
four-story building in Yongsan Ward, central Seoul, where some 40 squatters had
been staging a sit-in protest since Monday to oppose a redevelopment project of
the area.
Police began a raid of the building around 6:40 a.m. The cause of death of the
five was not immediately known.
"We've moved the bodies and the injured to a nearby hospital," an official at the
Yongsan fire station said. Cable news channel YTN reported that 12 people were
seriously injured in clashes with police.
