BMA: Water released from Chao Phraya Dam not affect Bangkok

BANGKOK, Sept 24 (TNA) – An official from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration gave assurance that the release of water from the Chao Phraya Dam has no impact on any areas in Thailand’s capital city of Bangkok. Villagers living in low-lying areas near the embankment of the Chao Phraya River are warned of possible floods following an increase of 202 cubic meters per second in the amount of water discharged from the Chao Phraya Dam in Chai Nat province. Water is currently released from the dam at the rate of 1,503 cubic meters per second. Nonetheless, Sompong Wiangkaew, director of the BMA’s Department of Drainage and Sewerage, said there has been no report of any areas in Bangkok affected by the dam’s water discharge. The warning should involved only the locals in Ang Thong, Sing Buri and Ayutthaya, he noted. The level of water in the Chao Phraya this morning was measured at 1.4 meters above mean sea level, while Bangkok can absorb up to two meters above mean sea level. The director, therefore, urged people not to panic over the news report of possible flood due to water discharged from Chao Phraya Dam. (TNA)
