RI, RUSSIA POISED TO FOSTER EDUCATION COOPERATION
Jakarta, Jan 20 (ANTARA) - Indonesian Deputy Chief Representative in Moscow Antonius Agus Sriyono encouraged here Tuesday an academic exchange between Russia and Indonesia.
Less than a week after a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the University of Indonesia (UI) and the Russian Polytechnic University of St. Petersburg was signed, Sriyono discussed closer ties between the two countries in a bid to further secure their bilateral ties.
"It is time to enhance the relationship between the two countries especially in the field of education. That's why we have asked Indonesian students to visit Russia, encouraged scholarship for the two countries' students from their respective governments," he said.
Sriyono said it was his duty to tell Indonesians that present day Russia is modern compared to defunct Soviet Union.
"The new [Russian] government believes in democracy. I don't see any difficulties in understanding the new face of Russia. We have to avoid the stigma and Russia was a Communist state," he said.
