RI NEEDS 57.442 MW MORE ELECTRICITY IN NEXT 10 YEARS

Jakarta, Jan 20 (ANTARA) - Indonesia, in the next ten years, is predicted to require more electricity of 57,442 MW, including 35,274 MW from state electricity company PT PLN and 22,168 MW to be contributed by independent power producers.
"The projected electricity consumption till 2018 is based on some assumptions like an economic growth of 6.69 percent and power consumption of 1.56 percent," PLN President Director Fahmi Mochtar said in a discussion on Fuel Mix Policy here on Tuesday.
Fahmi said the result of simulation showed that the need for electricity in 2008 reached 128.9 TWh (terra watt hour) would be increased to 325.2 TWh in 2018 when the electrification ratio reached 95.5 percent.
According to him, the coal-fired power plants would become the backbone of the Indonesian power system in the next ten years, while the number of power plants running on fuel oil had been predicted to decline.
To that end, the targetted fuel mix in line with a plan to supply more power in the next ten years is only by reducing the use of fuel oil to two percent of the total power production in 2018.
In addition, PLN was also attempting to reach a better heat rate so as to make a more rational production cost.
The consumtion of fuel oil, which was still big accounting for 15.5 percent in 2007, will be lowered to 4.7 percent in 2010 and 1.2 percent in 2018.
The contribution of coal is projected to increase from 49.7 percent in 2007 to 61.2 percent in 2010 or 64.1 percent in 2018, while the portion of natural gas will also be raised from 18.1 percent in 2007 to 21.1 percent in 2010 and 27.2 percent in 2018.
