PKS CALLS ON GOVT TO CURTAIL SALE OF ALCOHOLIC DRINKS IN FTZ

Tanjungpinang, Indonesia, Jan 20 (ANTARA) - The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) called on the government of Riau islands province to curtail the sale of alcoholic drinks in the free trade zones (FTZ) of Batam, Bintan and Karimun.
"We are worried about the distribution of alcoholic drinks from other countries will be out of control after the declaration of the three islands as free trade zones," PKS for the Riau Island Provincial Chapter Wildan Hadi Purnama said here Tuesday.
Wildan said the implementation of the FTZ should not heed only the interest of businessmen and state's income, but should take into account the negative impacts on the people.
The government should synergize the implementation of FTZ with the condition of people in Riau islands.
"We support FTZ, but we hope its implementation should not ignore religious norms and values of Malay culture which put forward first the Islamic tenets," he said.
He also urged the FTZ Council chaired by Riau Islands Governor Ismeth Abdullah and the Authority of Batam, Bintan and Karimun regions had to be able to make a regulation designed to curtail the distribution and sale of alcoholic drinks.
"We hope the implementation of FTZ will not run counter to the norms and values of Malay culture which do not allow the sale and consumption of alcoholic drinks," he said.
According to him, alcoholic drinks had caused legal problems to the people. People consuming alcoholic drinks had the potential to break the law.
Some youngsters in the province had consumed alcoholic drinks. This condition must not be ignored or uncorrected, he said.
"It will give more disadvantages to the people, unless the distribution of alcoholic drinks to the free trade zone is stopped," he cited.
