PROTESTERS CALL ON OBAMA TO STOP TORTURE OF WAR PRISONERS
Jakarta, Jan. 21 (ANTARA) - Around 100 people wearing orange outfits staged a rally in front of the US Embassy here on Wednesday, calling on the US under the Obama leadership to stop torturing war prisoners and close the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.
The protesters were from various NGOs including Kontras (Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence).
They urged the Obama administration to close the Guantanmo Bay detention camp within the next 100 days at the latest. Otherwise, they would question the US commitment to uphold human rights which the US had always championed.
A UN investigation has concluded that the United States committed acts amounting to torture at Guantanamo Bay, including force-feeding detainees and subjecting them to prolonged solitary confinement.
In an extraordinary public declaration, the US top military judge overseeing the military tribunals at Guantanamo Bay admitted two of the principal charges long made against the Bush administration?that prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp have been tortured, and that the torture was carried out in accordance with an official policy set in Washington.
In an interview with Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward recently, Susan Crawford said that prisoner Mohammed al-Qahtani had been so systematically abused through isolation, sleep deprivation, forced nudity and exposure to cold that he was in a "life-threatening condition."
