SEARCH EFFORTS FOR SINKING SHIP VICTIMS IN ACEH WATERS END
Banda Aceh, Jan 22 (ANTARA) - The search efforts for the victims of a sinking ship in the waters of Malaka Strait near Idi Rayek territorial waters of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) was stopped beginning Thursday (Jan 22), a spokesman said.
The search activities were stopped after eight days of hard works conducted by the Search and Rescue (SAR) team to find dozens of the ill-fated ship's victims, Lt. Tedi Sutardi, Navy's task force command in Idi Rayek, sub-district said here on Thursday.
The SAR team which was assisted by the local fishermen failed to obtain the rest of the victims, the Navy's spokesman said, adding that the ship sank on Tuesday (Jan 13) night after sailing from Penang, Malaysia to Indonesian territory.
Report said, the wooden ship carrying some 48 workers from Aceh, North Sumatra and Java sank after being hit by huge waves about 15 miles away from Idi beach.
Survivors of the ship's passengers amounting 25 persons, nine passengers died and other 14 persons went missing.
"We have been searching the victims for eight days and fail to find all of the ship's passengers. Perhaps, the rest of the passengers had sunken to the bottom of the sea," Tedi said.
The country's workers who didn't have legal documents had to leave Malaysia after the neighboring country's government expelled them.
Regarding the Aceh workers, they could work in Malaysia based on the special document issued by Malaysian government relating to the 2004 tsunami-hit disaster devastating Aceh and Nias (North Sumatra) province, which had expired in December 2008, spokesman added.
