CAR SALES THIS YEAR PREDICTED TO DROP 24 PCT
Jakarta, Jan 21 (ANTARA) - Car sales in Indonesia have been predicted to drop 24 percent in January 2009 compared to those in December last year due to car price hikes in the midst of declining demands.
"Orders drop quite significantly this month," marketing director of PT Toyota Astra Motor, Joko Trisanyoto, said here on Wednesday.
PT Toyota Astra Motor as car market leader in the country last year sold 212,150 units, accounting for 34.9 percent of total national car sales of 607 units.
Joko predicted domestic car sales in January would reach only 30,000 units, a drop of 24 percent from 39,600 units in December.
"More consumers bought cars in December 2008 for fear of rising prices in January 2009 and therefore this month's sales would drop," he said.
According to trend, he said sales usually dropped in the first quarter and then rose in the second quarter and moved up further in the third quarter, and then went flat in the fourth quarter.
"Although there will be general elections we are still optimistic growth will continue in the second through the fourth quarters. The shock on consumers over price increases is expected to be overcome in the second quarter and so purchases are expected to start increasing in March," he said.
He admitted that the high interest rate of leasing which was between 18 and 20 percent would slow down car purchases this year and therefore he hoped banks would help reduce their lending rates.
He said most financing agencies got funds from banks and therefore the interest rates would affect car purchases.
In 2009 car sales would still be dominated by multi-purpose vans particulary those priced below Rp200 million while the sale of sedans would be constantly eroded because of significant price increases.
In 2008, car sales in the country reached 41,300 units, up compared to the 39,180 units in 2007.
