RUPIAH SLIGHTLY STRENGTHENS ON THURSDAY MORNING
Jakarta, Jan. 22 (ANTARA) - The rupiah strengthened slightly against the US dollar in the Jakarta interbank spot market on Thursday morning, as market players released the greenbacks.
The rupiah added 25 points to Rp11,175/11,235 per US dollar, from Rp11,200/Rp11,225 per US dollar in the market's close a day earlier.
"However, the US dollar release is relatively small, so that the rupiah's advance is not big and its position is still at over Rp11,000 per US dollar," Banking Retail Director of PT Bank Mega Tbk. Kostaman Thayib said here on Thursday.
The Indonesian currency gained as market players released their dollars for profit taking.
"We predict the rupiah will further advance because market players are worried that the global economic growth would get difficult because new US President Barack Obama in his inaugural speech did not mention about stimulus package for the infrastructure sector," he said.,
"We'll see, whether Obama's role will contribute positively to the world economic growth, especially in the United States where the economic growth is slowing down," he said.
If the profit taking action continued, the rupiah would reach a level of nearly Rp11,000 per US dollar, which was said as the new equilibrium for the Indonesian currency, he said.
