Thailand praised for promoting social human rights

BANGKOK, October 26 (TNA) - The visiting President of the Australian National Human Rights Commissions (ANHRC), Emeritus Prof. Gillian Triggs, has praised Thailand's role in promoting social human rights of people of vulnerable groups. Emeritus Prof. Triggs, who is in Thailand to attend the Asia–Pacific Forum on National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in Bangkok, scheduled for October 25-27, expressed the appreciation while paying a courtesy call on Thai Deputy Prime Minister Visanu Krue-ngam at Government House on October 25. Emeritus Prof. Triggs said Australia is interested in social human rights issues, covering anti-human trafficking and irregular migration cases, lauding Thailand's role in promoting social human rights and vowing to support cooperation between Canberra and Bangkok at the regional level under ASEAN frameworks. The visiting ANHRC president also agreed on and expressed appreciation to the Thai government's policy on paying attention to social human rights issues, especially those of people in vulnerable groups, namely children, women, the elderly, persons with disabilities (PWDs) and the other underprivileged. Besides, the visiting ANHRC president mentioned that her trip to Bangkok this week is also aimed to exchange experiences between ANHRC and Thailand's National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) through NHRIs. The Thai deputy premier, meanwhile, took the opportunity to brief Thailand's updated situation and progress of the official roadmap on national reforms toward a new general election, affirming that the progress is within the government's timeframe. The Thai deputy prime minister noted that strict law enforcements are needed to ensure national peace and order until the situation in Thailand fully returns to normal. According to the Thai deputy prime minister, measures having been implemented by the Thai government during the ongoing transitional period toward a new general election have been based on the legal basis with no violation of human rights.
