Thailand hosts World Irrigation Forum

CHIANG MAI, Nov 6 (TNA) – Thailand is hosting the second World Irrigation Forum (WIF2) in tandem with the 67th International Executive Council Meeting in the northern province of Chiang Mai on Nov 6-12. Gen Chatchai Sarikulya, Thai minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, on Sunday presided over the opening ceremony of the event at the International Convention Centre Commemorating His Majesty 7th Cycle Birthday Anniversary in Chiang Mai. This year’s forum takes place under the theme of “Water Management in a Changing World: Role of Irrigation for Sustainable Food Production”, which will focus on seeking ways to balance water, food, energy and ecology, developing measures against floods and droughts caused by climate change, and alleviating hunger and poverty through irrigation and water drainage systems. Some 1,200 people from 40 countries agreed to attend the meeting. The attendees include ministerial- and high-level officials, executives from academic institutions, and water and irrigation experts from both public and private sectors. (TNA)
