CHINESE COMMUNITY ADVISED TO TEMPER LUNAR NEW YEAR FESTIVITIES

Medan, Jan 23 (ANTARA0 - North Sumatra Governor Syamsul Arifin called on the Chinese community in the region not to celebrate the lunar new year on Monday excessively because the country was currently facing the impact of the global crisis.
He said by exercising restraint by not holding excessive parties they would help safeguard harmony in the life of the nation.
"In the current atmosphere of crisis we must all be concerned. However to those who will celebrate it I appeal to do it by not reducing the spiritual values bequethed by their ancestors," he said.
He admitted that Chinese community members were an inseparable part of the Indonesian nation and therefore he hoped they would help maintain the harmonious relationship with other community members and conducive situation in the region that had been built so far.
"To maintain the harmonious relationship with other community members I hope ethnic Chinese community would control their celebration for the lunar new year to safeguard national resilience," he said.
On the occasion, he also appealed to ethnic Chinese community members to use local tourist objects as the places for their new year holiday and celebration.
"By celebrating at home we will spend our money at home to help development in the country," he said.
