INDONESIAN MIGRANT WORKER TRAPPED IN GAZA NOW IN CAIRO
Jakarta, Jan 23 (ANTARA) - An Indonesian migrant worker trapped in the Gaza Strip had been evacuated by the Indonesian embassy in Cairo, a spokesman said on Friday.
"Umi Saodah was evacuated from the Gaza Strip at 2 a.m West Indonesia Standard Time (WIB) and is now staying at the Indonesian embassy in Cairo. The evacuation took place under coordination with the Indonesian embassy in Cairo and the Palestinian Red Cross," Teuku Faizasyah, Foreign Ministry spokesman, said here.
The evacuation had been difficult because when the war was still raging in the Gaza Strip, Umi Saodah was held by Palestinian police, he added.
"The place where Saodah lived was still unknown, even to the government," Faizasyah said.
From 11 p.m to 2 a.m WIB the last round of negotiations was held, and Umi Saodah was brought to Cairo through Rafah, Egypt.
Umi Saodah will be sent back to Indonesia as soon as all the formalities had been completed, Faizasyah said.
"There are no more constraints to send Umi Saodah home, but she may still have some unfinished business. It's just a matter of time. The most important thing is that she was no longer in the Gaza Strip," he said.
