VP : RI'S EDUCATION NOT AFFECTED AT ALL BY GLOBAL CRISIS
Padang, W Sumatra, Jan 24 (ANTARA) - The global crisis is not in the least affecting education in Indonesia where teachers continue to enjoy salary raises, Vice President Jusuf Kalla said here Saturday.
"The State Budget allocation for eduction has remained 20 percent and teachers continue to get salary increases," Kalla said in a scientific oration at the Bung Hatta University.
Of the Rp1,000 trillion 2009 State Budget, Rp200 trillion had been appropriated for the National Education Ministry which oversees public schools, and the Religious Affairs Ministry which manages Muslim schools (madrasahs), he said.
The global crisis was affecting many economic and other activities in the United States but so in Indonesia, Kalla said.
Referring to education in the United States, Kalla said US President Barack Obama had in his inaugural speech called for a change in the US education system so it could compete with China's and India's systems.
"What's wrong with education in the United States?. Over the years, mathematics and physics have come to be mastered by students in India and China. In Silicon Valley, there are more Indians and Chinese than Americans themselves," Kalla said.
He said it was discipline that had made education in India and China better than in the United States and Indonesia.
Kalla on the occasion also expressed hope Bung Hatta University's faculty and students would always be able to live up to the high reputation of the man after whom their university was named, namely Mohammad Hatta (the country's first vice president), who was a true man of science, democrat and a person of solid principles. .
