GOVT ASKS PERTAMINA TO REPLACE ITS ENTIRE MANAGEMENT

Jakarta, Jan 23 (ANTARA) - The government was asked to replace the entire board of directors of state oil and gas company PT Pertamina, oil affairs analyst Kurtubi and member of the House's Commission VII Alvin Lie said Friday.

"The Pertamina directors lacked good performance. Therefore all its directors need replacement," Kurtubi said.

He mentioned some flaws in the company's management such as fuel oil and LPG shortages, prompting President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to admonish them.

He also mentioned the number of fires at Pertamina's installations in Cilacap and Sorong, and most recent Plumpang depot fire.

"The inefficiency of imported crude oil and fuel as revealed in the Zatapi case is another example," he said.

In the up-stream sector, Kurtubi mentioned the development of the gas field and LNG plant in Senoro, Central Sulawesi which was originally under Pertamina's management, but then shared with others.

Consequently, Pertamina, the state and the regions failed to gain a maximum profit.

"Actually, Pertamina was capable of carrying out its tasks alone, in view of its experience in building the LNG plant in Arun, Nangroe Aceh Darussalam, and in Badak, East Kalimantan," he said.

Meanwhile Alvin Lie also touched on similar problems facing Pertamina.

According to him, many cases of shortfalls since 2006 up to now was proof of the company's mistakes, including that of its president director.

According to Lie, the government had the authority to appoint as well as dismiss the directors and commisioners of state-owned enterprises (BUMN) including Pertamina.

He also wished that the replacement would be executives who are only thinking of the company's development, without any economic or political motives.

Kurtubi said the new management must care for the people's purchasing power, not only after financial gain.

Meanwhile another member of the House Comission VII Tjatur Sapto Edy said the replacements also need to have capabilities in handling the up-stream sector, as 70-80 percent of Pertamina's profit came from the upstream sector.

According to him, downstream sector could be managed by Pertamina's subsidiaries.
