RI EXPECTED TO HELP END ISRAELI EMBARGO ON GAZA
Jakarta, Jan 24 (ANTARA) - Palestine is calling on Indonesia to play a more significant role in UN and other international forums to pressure Israel into lifting its embargo on humanitarian aid supplies to Gaza , a spokesman said.
"Indonesia is also expected to take concrete steps along with other countries grouped in international organizations including those in Southeast Asia by bringing Israel to the International Court of Justice for killing people including civilians in Gaza," Hamas spokesman Sammi Abu Uzair told Antara here Saturday.
Uzair also called on the Indonesian government and people to maintain close relations with the Palestinian government and people so that they could make efforts to force Israel to open the border to Gaza so that relief assistance could reach Palestine victims of the Israeli attacks.
Uzair also called on the Indonesian government and parliament together with the Palestinian government and people to strive for the latter's independence as a lot of people in Gaza were now living without water and electricity.
"Indonesia is a big country which can influence other countries to make political and diplomatic efforts in the UN to exert strong pressure on Israel to stop its aggression as the sufferings and losses among people in Gaza are continuing," he said.
Uzair also rejected Israel's claims that its aggression against Palestine was only a reaction to Hamas' attacks. "That is not true because , on the contrary, it was Israel that has attacked us and is colonizing our country," said Uzair who is also a special assistant to Palestine's Prime Minister Ismail Haniye.
"Our strength is nothing compared to that of Israel which has sophisticated equipment like helicopters and tanks which have killed many people, including children, destroyed houses, school buildings and hospitals," he said.
He earlier disclosed that the 22-day assaults committed by Israeli military since December 27, 2008 had killed some 1,330 people and injured 5,450 others.
Uzair reiterated Hamas's military wing had remained solid and had vowed to keep fighting against Israel.
Uzair who lives in Gaza has been in Indonesia since Thursday (January 22) to explain the latest condition in Palestine to Indonesian prominent figures, including House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung Laksono and People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Chairman Hidayat Nurwahid.
Uzair is scheduled to return to his country on Monday (January 26).
