KPU BRIEFS PARTY REPRESENTATIVES ON ELECTORAL RULES

Jakarta, Jan 24 (ANTARA) - The General Elections Commission (KPU) here Saturday again called up political party executives for a gathering to familiarize them with several electoral rules.

The rules concerned such things as campaign fund audits and campaign rally schedules to be effective in March.

KPU chairman Abdul Hafiz Anshary said the KPU had drawn up a schedule for 21 days of campaigning as of March 16. He said the draft schedule needed to be discussed with party executives so that an agreement could be made about it.

He said that as a matter of principle political parties had to be given equal opportunities in conducting campaigns.

"March 16 will be for joint campaigning. As of March 17 to April 5 campaigning will be done upon a rule that only three to four parties will be allowed to carry out campaigning in one day," he said before party representatives.

In the meeting the KPU chairman also explained about seat distribution, vote counting, determining legislative members and familiarization of presidential elections on July 8 and a runoff, in case it happens, on September 8.

On the occasion party executives would also be given an opportunity to check the names of their legislative candidates before they were printed on ballots.

The KPU chief hoped party executives who attended the meeting could communicate problems they met in the field. He hoped the implementation of this year's elections would be smooth, peaceful and without dangerous upheavals.
