JETFOIL SINKS NEAR BANGKA ISLAND, ALL PASSENGERS, CREW SAVED
Palembang, Indonesia, Jan 27 (ANTARA) - A jetfoil, the Express Bahari 5, sank in waters near Bangka island on Monday (Jan 26) but all of its 61 passengers and eight-man crew were saved, local marine sources said.
The boat had left Palembang's Boom Baru port for Bangka Island on Monday afternoon but was overwhelmed by huge waves after entering waters near Bngka Island, R Bambang, deputy chief of the Palembang branch of the Search and Rescue Agency ((Basarnas), said.
He said he had been informed by the Boom Baru port administrator and local authorities that all of the boat's 61 passengers and 8-man crew had been rescued and evacuated to Boom Baru port.
The rescue was accomplished by a ferry boat which happened to sailing not far from where the shipwreck happened.
According to the accounts of some of the survivors, huge waves caused the Ekspres Bahari 5 Jetfoil to take in too much water so that it could eventually no longer reamin afloat.
Before the boat left Boom Baru port. , the local Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) had issued a warning about bad weather at sea and speficially mentioned the occurrence of high waves that were dangerous for sea voyages, especially in small vessels.
During the past few months, a number of shipwrecks have happened in the Bangka Strait but in all of the accidents, passemhers amd crews survived.
