STUDENT RALLIES GREET PRESIDENT IN MALANG

Malang, Indonesia, Jan 27 (ANTARA) - Rallies by tens of students from different organizations greeted President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono when he arrived at Brawijaya University and the Malang State Islamic University (UIN) here Tuesday morning.

The protesters demanded the annulment of a law passed in December 2008 giving educational institutions legal entity status (BHP), revocation of a joint decree of four ministers concerning manpower, nationalization of foreign assets and a halt to actions to deprive people of their land.

The coordinator of one of the rallies, Andy, said there were many unsolved problems related to the people's right to enjoy a prosperous life in their own country.

He said the government's decision to lower fuel oil prices had not been effective as it was not followed by decreases in the prices of daily necessaries. In fact, the people continued to be concerned about a tendency of the prices of daily necessaries to rise gradually.

Andy also berated the government for taking away people's land with the excuse the land was needed to build public facilities while in reality it was used for highways, international airports and roads.

He said the joint decree of four ministers about manpower which linked the level of workers' wages to corporate growth instead of inflation had also worsened the people's economic conditions.

"The people are llving in deplorable economic conditions. Workers' welfare is deteriorating. Layoffs are in the offing due to the global economy crisis and government often issues policies not in the people's favor," he added.

Meanwhile, police had deployed 3,000 men to ensure security at the places to be visited by the president in Malang where he was scheduled to deliver a scientific oration at Brawijaya University and dedicate a new buidling worth Rp38 billion of the Malang State Islamic University (UIN).
