US ENVOY SAYS EDUCATION SUPPORTS PEACE IN ACEH
Banda Aceh, Jan 30 (ANTARA) - Education can support the continuity of peace in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) province, United States Ambassador to Indonesia Cameron Hume said here on Thursday.
"Schools can support peace. And I think peace will be difficult to have if it is not supported with education," Hume said in a function to hand library equipment to the Lab School of Syiah Kuala University (Unsiyah).
On the occasion the US envoy said education and public service cooperation were on the list of priority in the relation between the United States and Indonesia.
Hume was in Banda Aceh to hand around US$100 thousand-worth of assistance in the form of English textbooks, computer softwares, furniture, and other equipment to support quality teaching and learning process at schools in Aceh.
The Lab School of Unsyiah was established by US-Indonesia Society (Usindo) after the 2004's devastating tsunami in Aceh. Teaching and learning process at the school started in July 2007.
Hume's visit to the school was the second after it was opened.
He said education was important for all people to get progress and to develop their own region.
Meawnile, Unsyiah rector Darni Daud said education was the key to success in development.
"We hope students who study at Lab School will become future leaders both in Aceh and Indonesia as well," Darni Daud said.
